The verification methods Google may offer, what to do when the process breaks, and the practical business facts that need to match before you submit.
01
Google chooses the verification method offered in the profile
02
business facts and supporting evidence should match the real operation
03
once verified, the profile can be managed, including information and review replies
Verification is a foundation for managing a Business Profile. Google determines which method is available, so the useful preparation is not gaming a method—it is making sure the real business facts, evidence, and profile information are consistent.
Verification Methods
Google decides which method to offer based on the profile and its context. You do not always get to choose, and the options can change.
Google asks you to record a short video showing your business location, signage, and equipment. Upload via the GBP dashboard. A Google reviewer watches the video and approves or requests more.
Tips for success:
Google may call or text a verification code to the business phone number shown in the profile. Enter the code in the profile when prompted.
Tips for success:
Google sends a verification code to an email address associated with your business domain. Enter the code in the dashboard.
Tips for success:
Google mails a postcard with a verification code to your business address. Enter the code in the GBP dashboard when it arrives.
Tips for success:
A Google representative video calls you to verify your business in real time. You'll need to show your location, signage, and proof of business operation.

After Verification
Verification gives you access to manage the profile. These practices keep the public information useful, defensible, and customer-ready.
Your GBP business name must match what's on your storefront, vehicle wrap, or business cards. No keywords, no city names, no taglines. 'Mike's HVAC' not 'Mike's HVAC Heating Cooling Repair Atlanta.'
Use the address and location model that accurately reflects how the business operates. Do not create a location just to rank in a city you do not actually serve.
If you go to customers, configure the service area to match the real service footprint. Do not use a service area as a substitute for a legitimate local operation.
Choose the most specific, accurate category for the core service—not the category that merely looks largest by search volume. Add only secondary categories that truthfully apply.
Use a business phone number customers can reliably reach and keep it consistent with the real business operation. If you use tracking, make sure the customer experience remains clear and workable.
Update hours for holidays and special closures. Accurate information keeps customers from arriving or calling at the wrong time and protects trust.
Add clear, current photos that help a customer understand the real business: work, vehicles, team, location where relevant, and the service experience.
Use posts when they give customers useful current information—recent work, seasonal updates, service education, or real offers. Do not publish filler just to look active.
Respond to reviews with professional, specific language. Good replies show future customers someone is paying attention; they should never expose customer information or sound templated.
Use the contact and messaging options Google makes available only if someone can own the response. An unanswered channel is worse than no channel.
Troubleshooting
Common verification problems and the practical next step to investigate.
Wait 14 days, then request a new postcard. Check that your address is entered correctly. If the building is new, Google's address database may not have it yet — contact support.
The most common rejection reason is that the signage in the video doesn't match the GBP name exactly. Re-record showing clear signage, your address number, and your workspace.
A previous owner, employee, or agency claimed the profile. Use the 'Request Access' option in GBP. The current owner has 7 days to respond. If they don't, Google grants you access.
Video verifications can take up to 5 business days. If it's been longer, contact GBP support directly through the dashboard. Don't submit a new verification request — it resets the queue.
Some business types require manual verification. Contact GBP support and explain your business type. Bring your business license and utility bill.
